In the Metaverse, there exist "shadows". Dangerous creatures. Some are tied to people -- those whose hearts have been distorted, sometimes by grief, or pain, sometimes by their own twisted desires.... it can be complicated. But distorted hearts breed their shadow versions. The ones whose hearts are particularly distorted become so powerful they can affect the real world. In the cognitive world, they become palace rulers or monarchs -- other shadows fall into into their service, and it can be extremely dangerous. In the real world, the palace rulers tend to be extremely vile people who trample on those around them and get away with it because those in power do nothing to stop them. There are exceptions, of course. But each of these palace rulers have a "treasure", an item that is the source of their twisted desires.
The opposite regarding the shadow affecting the person is also true. If the palace ruler's shadow is defeated and killed in the Metaverse, the person in the real world will die. However... if you defeat the shadow, and ultimately spare it but steal their treasure -- that palace ruler's cognition will change. Ah, that is what is called "a change of heart". A chance for that person to change for the better. To repent for their crimes.
Lupin and I are part of a group called the Phantom Thieves. We infiltrate the palaces, fight shadows, and steal twisted desires. We fight for all the victims of the palace rulers by changing the hearts of the ones tormenting them.

But, this "contract" -- is there a price? What happens to you?

No, there isn't a price to the contract. I suppose.... it liberates me, in a way.
Of course, the cognitive world is very dangerous. We're fighting for our lives every time we're in there. But.... I have no regrets.
